Not only that, but Parliament would only need to be consulted within 30 days of the police deciding that they needed to hold a suspect beyond 28 days. Should the police decide on day 28 that they need to continue holding the suspect, it could be moot what Parliament thinks.

Also, it’s not clear how this is supposed to work during the summer holidays.

most MPs seem rightly to think 4 weeks should be long enough for someone to come up with a good reason to charge someone.

One of the striking things about the current debate is the way it highlights how quickly those who lead such debates accept the status quo. The question seems to be whether to increase it to 42 days or leave it as it is. But MPs who voted against 28 days last time should be starting from a position of tabling spoiler amendments to reduce it back to 14 days. There has been no material change to the security/law enforcement situation since then, and the Home Office isn't offering any substantial claim that there has been ( ... )

Wise words. The slow way of making people comfortable with anything (like over zealous security checks at US airports for example, or income tax, or bank charges).
