My memory is not what it used to be...

My Acer is slowly crippling itself, and I can't find out why. It seems to take am an oridnate amount of memory, hiccups and goes slow. Looing at the system stats it's often using 750MB with not that much being used by active processes. Firefox itself seems to gobble up memory while just sitting there (I've tested that by leaving it on all night ( Read more... )

Can you tell whether the memory is being used for cache or for actual data. The ideal computer set up almost no memory is "wasted" it is all being used to speed up something but is used for caching so it can be given back. Are there many things in active processes you don't recognise?

There's a lot (30-40), but most seem to be windows processes, a couple in there I'd not like to stake my life on being useful.

It looks like there's a lot of memory being used which must be off the drive, as there's 512Mb in the machine but often over 600Mb in toal being used 9according to the monitor).

I do wonder why Mozilla continue to make these known-problematic ones available via their "official" extensions page.
