Technology, bits keep falling off of me...

My iPod is giving up the ghost. But in a very simple but seemingly unfixable way. Which makes it more irritating. The headphone socket has got a lose connection, meaning I get sound in one ear unless I twiddle the jack into the right position and hold it there. Anyone know a easy way to get into an iPod? You're sure it's the socket and not the 'phones? I've had 2 sets of earphones fail that way with the iPhone.

At first I thought it was the headphones, but trying them on other things, and other headphones on the iPod, it's not them (which is half good, as these AKG headphones are lovely).

I think a connection inside has gone, which means soldering irons.

I've taken an iPod Shuffle apart to change the battery - it's all very tight and fragile inside, so be careful not to tear any ribbon cables for example.
Perfectly doable though - but the headphone socket is likely to be surface mount, so be aware you'll need a very small soldering iron bit.

There's a chance there might be a very easy fix. iPods can be quite tempremental if there's any gunk in the headphone socket and will often behave as described. Get a can of compressed air (available from any good computer bits supplier) and give the socket a quick blast. Might not work, but if it does it's a hell of a lot easier than opening it up.
