Some odd conversation with Bottle Imp started me thinking. Who is my favourite character in Indian writing in English? I don't know! It should be shocking but it isn't... what characters has IWE thrown up so far that you feel attached to them afterwards... as if they meant anything.

My responses surprised me a bit.

Akilan of No Onions Nor Garlic ( Read more... )

Agastya Sen from English, August.
Juggut Singh from Train to Pakistan.

Uhh, that's about it. I just glanced in the shelf -- the only Indian writing in English I could find were (1) God of Small Things, (2) Sudha Murty's Mahashweta (both not my copies) and (3) an anthology of poems titled Confronting Love (which is mine).

Sniff. How to fix the situation? Maybe I shouldn't bother?

Oh you should... if you like. I like.

You could get No Onions, Nor garlic by Srividya Natarajan.

I really dont know you. But I think I might start stalking you. It started with Pink chaddis and now my mind is racing through the library or already read Indian fiction in English. This one is easy though I have had a crush on Harsh from Vikram Seth's A Suitable Boy since I was in class 6. I'm still looking for a boy who's eyes crinkle and disappear when he smiles.

Book slut. What a great pic. ext_267889 September 26 2010, 21:49:40 UTC
I love the image of the book slut. Did you draw it, or get it elsewhere? It would be fantastic for my school kids, who just don't get the book thing. This would change there minds (some of them, but you know). But I can't use the 'slut' part' or the school will wig out, so I'd need to have it changed.

Steve.
