the colloquial use of "al volo" usually means quickly. like "arrivo al volo" means "I will be there quickly", or "capisce al volo" means "she understands immediately." I don't know if that is really the expression you are looking for.

if you can give me a better idea of what you are want to say, I'd be happy try to help you out.

the thing that comes to my mind is a line from a Luca Carboni song

come chicci di grano
buttati per caso in un campo cresciamo
magari forse ci amiamo
ma poi ci scontriamo e non ci s'incontra piu

trans-
like grains of wheat
thrown into a field, we grow
maybe we love each other
but then we crash into each other and we never meet again

it's probably a bit long for what you are looking for, but it always makes me think of the randomness of life and who you love and who you lose.

that makes it sound like al volo isn't what i'm looking for... damn.

maybe i need to just get english tattooed on myself...

if you were going to translate "to the flight" or "to the journey" or something along those lines (given the context i explained in my entry) how would you do it? i'm even interested in a statement about struggle/making it through.

those are beautiful lyrics but i'm not sure i have enough skin on my arm to fit it all in... :)

yeah, the lyrics are great, but definitely a bit long.

if you wanted to say "to the jouney/trip" you could say "al viaggio"

but in that case you might want to go directy for Dante with "al cammin di nostra vita"... so you get the sense you want and the literary reference :)
