it's pretty neat. you take photos at bracketed exposures (usually for this, one at normal exposure, one with a bit slower shutter speed, one with a bit faster). Then you layer them with photoshop and it makes it so you can the most detail everywhere (even areas of the photo that are normally very shadowy).
How heavy is your tripod? Is it plastic or metal? mine is metal and old, and really it's my dads but I stole it. So yours is probably still lighter. My backpack has a tripod section in it, so hopefully it will work...

as for the tripod...I have one you might want to use...not sure its any lighter tho..
