We live in a results-driven and materialistic society. Concrete and tangible results provided to us by scientists and manifesting as technology and consumer goods appeal more directly to individuals that the intangible and purely conceptual.

Yes, that's true. I think overall it's a lack of respect or understanding of the importance of abstract thought.
