Ah, 'tis only for the US. Actually, I've been looking for an environmental charity to make regular donations too and have been struggling to tell which ones are the best, i.e. most effective, ones. You seem like you may be in a position to know. I'm more interested in giving to those specifically targetting global warming and deforestation of rainforests (I think some organisations, like Greenpeace, are too broad and my money could go anywhere).

Any ideas? Cheers in advance.

My apologies for the US-ness. Will they really not take your money if you're overseas? That's too bad.

I might suggest Trees For Life, Rainforest Action Network (they take donations from any country with a credit card), and also check out a list of NGO's at the Climate Ark site here.

Ever since I heard about Terra Pass something about it just made me feel weird. I couldn't quite put my finger on it.... I still can't really. I just don't really like sending out the idea that we can buy our way out of energy conservation. I see this as something I could potentially use as an excuse to continue at my current rate of energy consumption. I can see it as something people who can afford it could use against people who can't.

I don't know... it's weird to me. It seems like a good idea... but it just has this shady classist excuse flavor to it, and I can't shake that feeling.

Your concerns are definitely legitimate; many people criticize these efforts because they think it makes people feel as though they can consume relentlessly as long as they "cancel out" with the Terra Pass. Personally, I find that it's a realistic way to offset the emmissions you can't otherwise eliminate; even a Prius uses gasoline (and my personal interest is in the airplane offset, because there's no feasible alternative to flying except, well, not ( ... )

Yeah, you're right. I think it's really snobby but the trend factor is a huge part of what annoys me. I hate to admit that! I'm a snob! GAH! The license plate frame totally annoys me!!

Isn't that cool? I might get one for the house, but I'll definitely get one to offset my airplane use. The lowest pass costs $29.99, so I think I might add it to my Christmas list. I might get a mug or a tote bag, too.
