this is belated and random

yes, Phillip Pullman is an athiest. Yes, he hates C.S. Lewis and Chronicles of Narnia, but the books are an awesome read. By the way - I read the books as more speaking against the Catholic Church (highly organized religion). Also, they don't "kill God" the way a lot of people have been saying. Not even in the first book. In the third book, at the end. Not even God, it's an imposter. They don't even kill him - someone else kills the imposter. So, if you're able to read a book for itself, and be able to acknowledge it's fiction and not let it affect your world view, almost any book is fine. So, that's my word, if it's worth anything.

I cannot speak to the books. However, after seeing the movie, there is some emphasis on the Catholic church (very obvious), but there is also an underlying anti-authoritarian bent as a whole pushed throughout the movie. My issue was more that, as a person who has influence in a group of people, I decided not to put it as something I hosted an event for (my birthday) as I do not want to potentially send the message that "this is great!" as I did with the Narnia movie a few years ago ( ... )

I agree with the Catholic Church comments. I also agree with the quality of the movie. They skipped over a lot of stuff and rushed through other stuff, like they did in Narnia, and I thought it could have been a lot better. But the first book, imo, was very very very good. Another random comment, the Harry Potter books are good reads, as well.

Your opinion on the Harry Potter books is once I've heard many a time. I don't disagree, but I find myself limited on time with so many books in my queue. I'm sure I'll get to them eventually. :P I'm glad you enjoy them though!
