all hail our new overlord!

this is the first time in my life that i'm proud to be an american, but not proud to be a californian.

at least the farm animals get to stretch their limbs.

also our new president made me cry. i've never, ever cried tears of joy for any election EVAR.

Shame about Proposition 8. (WTF? That's California not Texas or Mississippi or some godforsaken redneck redoubt. Where did all those homophobes come from?)

at least the farm animals get to stretch their limbs.
And you'll also get America's first high-speed train, which will be rather cool.

Statement by No on Prop 8 Campaign on Election Status

Roughly 400,000 votes separate yes from no on Prop 8 - out of 10 million votes tallied.

Based on turnout estimates reported yesterday, we expect that there are more than 3 million and possibly as many as 4 million absentee and provisional ballots yet to be counted.

Given that fundamental rights are at stake, we must wait to hear from the Secretary of State tomorrow how many votes are yet to be counted as well as where they are from.

It is clearly a very close election and we monitored the results all evening and this morning.

As of this point, the election is too close to call.

Because Prop 8 involves the sensitive matter of individual rights, we believe it is important to wait until we receive further information about the outcome.

i took wednesday off work so i could stay up tuesday night for the coverage with my fellow american friend. i was so glad i did. the speech made me cry and when i kind of whispered "yes we can" to myself, i didn't feel any cynicism and it was genuine and not a slightly ironic gesture. it felt damn good to feel hopeful and idealistic yet not naive. i've gotten so many congratulations here it's unbelievable. yes we can.

(and i know what you mean about feeling proud to be an american, but not a californian. usually it's the other way around.)
