Love, love, love Florence and The Machine - I don't know why but I always find her musical almost, very dramatic, a bit like Imogen Heap and it creates such a powerful image :)
OMG, WHEN DID NAOMI GET A TUMBLR?! (She must have posted that when Emily was flouncing off out with Mandy and she was left home alone to be all ~emo) ;)
'Then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your life...' - Oh, LOLL♥
I usually use pleasefindthis as inspiration for fics, because I never seem to be able to find one or two songs that I can always write to. That being said, I usually like slow, sad songs, even for when I'm writing happy things; I feel like it brings out more emotions.
I think I write to different songs for each thing that I write but there are always some songs that come back round each and every time - I never get tired of listening to Rosie Thomas - Since You've Been Around - just the music, the vibe, the lyrics and her voice get me every single time.
No problem. Also! I remembered, after I'd commented, that one of the songs I listen to the most when I'm writing is Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" (or various covers of that song). So there you go.
I LOVE Tracy Chapman with a passion, her albums are great; she's a really clever lyricist, and Fast Car is a brilliant song (which I get irrationally angry about when people cover it - just like Boyzone did to 'Baby can i hold you tonight' and ruined it!)
Well I think it's pretty obvious which song I play during the writing of whatever fic I'm on, because I name each fic after a line from it. But songs don't inspire me, it's usually an idea that pops into my head during the day, or a story I find I want to explore whilst I'm re-watching an episode. And then I try to find a song that fits the fic, 'cause I hate title-ling. Aside from that, though, clearly all the songs actually used in the show remind me of them, especially Lily Allen's, or any song that's been used in a video on youtube that's stuck with me, notably The Script's The End Where I Begin and Carolina Liar's Show Me What I'm Looking For.
Ah, that's interesting that you work in the complete opposite way to me, you make the idea fit the song rather than take elements/or a lyric from the song spark the foundation for an idea.
Do you ever find it difficult to decide on a song for your completed piece, like, what process do you use? Do you pick any random song with a line that you just happen to like or does that line have to fit in with the fic somewhere/somehow?
Thanks for sharing, it's really interesting to see how everyone works :)
I haven't got round to writing anything in forever, but I always get ideas for fics that "could be" from music. It tends to be Wilco at the moment, but that's mostly because all their songs are frickin beautiful and are all about angsty relationships.
Also inspired a lot by Guided By Voices, but that may cos I only started listening to them recently and am going on a bit of a binge. Apart from them The National works sometimes, but they tend to be really specific to specific events in their songs, so it's hard to imagine them apply to people outside of the singer's world.
I think music that we ourselves can relate to makes it much easier to almost reflect that onto certain characters, you know? I really like Wilco, they have some great songs :)
