Computers Causing Me Trouble

1. My Asus made an appearance at the repair center late last night.  It is now listed as being recieved on August 15th, instead of the August 9th FedEx claims.  Of course I sent it out on the 6th. This means the expected 10-14 business day period now gives August 29th to September 2nd.  It is not currently in the repair phase, but simply in what ( Read more... )

$135 to rent? Since you're not as poor as the rental place expects (and almost seems to require), I recommend just buying another computer for a few hundred dollars more. Probably not a portable one, if you're looking for the best gaming experience for the least dough. (And this way, there's more of a role distinction between it and your laptop, when you get your laptop back.)

Not only is it $135 to rent a low quality laptop for the shortest possible period (1 month) but I also compared the specs of their Lenovo to similar Lenovos over at Amazon. The type of laptop is not very expensive. Under $500. Thus if someone had the money buying would be better than renting for 4 months. I think the only people that do it are those who are really poor and have no credit, so they can't buy the $500 laptop so they end up paying thousands in the long run. It may be that the yearly rate is cheaper, but they are still certainly ripping people off given that the machine is so inexpensive ( ... )

I wasn't envisioning getting something similar in performance to your laptop. I was thinking something less, but still probably better than what you'd be renting.

If you're OK with doing the headstart weekend in the basement, I'm sure you could use your TV. Possible uses for a decent-but-not-fabulous and not-very-portable machine include being a file or print server for the house, a place to dump backups of stuff, and a party gaming machine for when people are over. And maybe you will eventually like using the big TV as your monitor whenever you're there, and it will be easier to leave it set up with the desktop. I don't remember what your situation is with streaming video content, but if you often watch that stuff on your laptop, I can easily see it being nice to watch it on the desktop on the TV, when you're in the basement.

So there are possibilities. It wouldn't be useless.

Ah, I got that you were suggesting the desktop become mine, but completely misinterpreted. I thought your mention of roles was to say that the desktop would be for gaming and the laptop for work (which is the traditional way people tell me it should go.) Your actual suggestion makes much more sense.

For $400-450 I could get something that could run GW2 on lower settings. Of your list of uses, I like the party gaming machine the best, but I don't have any friends with the time to come over and play. Perhaps I need to make some.

We have a wireless printer thingie so we can print from all computers already. We have a cord where I plug in my laptop to do the streaming video thing.

So yes, for three times the price of the rental I could get a computer I could keep. It still isn't too tempting though, but it is a possibility. Especially if I want to avoid giving my money to a company that does what Rent-A-Center does.
