So, MegaCon was fun yesterday.
Thuan's daughter, Maya, cosplays and this year she's going as Zuko. She always cosplays boys and I think that's just really fantastic. She doesn't give a shit about some of the apparent elements of cosplaying that deal with tapping into "sexy." She's a mature 14, so it's not like she's just simply innocent. She just loves it and she loves to do it right--to her, just wearing the store-bought costume with no make-up or wig just doesn't look right. She's been featured in some "videos by some dude who is a famous dude who takes videos of cosplayers." Zoku wasn't ready until last night, so she just wore this giant, pajama-like penguin that some players wear when they aren't in full cosplay. I saw some pandas and whatnot, and this is supposed to be very, very distinct from furries. Costume signification, oh my.
Anyway, I always hit the goth booths at these things and see what I can find. It's better than shopping online because I can touch the damn product. On the other hand, they'll make you pay out the nose at a con for something much less expensive if you found it elsewhere.
Saw Tom Felton and Charisma Carpernter. That was nice.
But my favorite part is that my partner's four kids are so awesome. We were all so excited about MegaCon and the younger ones flipped out every time they saw a Doctor, the big Tardis they had there, etc. They met my friend Eric Peterson, who is very reserved, but he was surprised they love Who so much, given their ages (the twins are 10, Simone is 7).
I'm not that in to Doctor Who, but I was happy to see some of my anime characters and be reminded of Buffy. Makes me want to watch Buffy again.
If I could cosplay any character, though, it would be Selene from Underworld. But that would be extremely expensive. Extremely.
