I spent 2 months in Australia this year. I spent most of my time in Sydney but did go north to Cairns and to a few other smaller cities. Sydney is amazing and if I could live there I quite possibly would. There are hicks in the smaller cities but I can't imagine getting a job outside of a larger city. The weather is awesome. Even winter isn't so bad so long as you can handle rain. As far as the drinking goes, about half of my friends there are big big drinkers the other can take it or leave it. It's pretty mixed. If it's any plus, there aren't tons of smokers. I would say the drinking situation isn't so much more than the people who love to drink in the states. I wouldn't write it off for the drinking reasons alone. If you can, go visit. It's coming up on summer and would be a blast.
