Possibly you have an issue with your wiring that is causing you grief. A friend of mine used to test polarity on sockets when he was setting up computer equipment at client sites and regularly found it was reversed. Ground was also frequently questionable. You can get an outlet tester for just a few bucks at radio shack.

I've gotten a outlet tester and have used it to check out all the outlets on the power strip (including the one to which the hub was plugged in)and the two wall outlets near the computer. Every one of them is reported as normal.
It was a great idea, though. Back to square one, which is simply playing musical ports with my numerous USB devices. (I have a three-year-old computer with exactly two USB ports. The ReadyBoost drive can't be removed, leaving one outlet for the printer, with which six or so other legitimate devices are contending - scanner, backup drive, flash disks, etc. No, I don't have any of those wacky ThinkGeek USB muffin makers. :-)
