this should be interesting...
one of my students just told me she's starting a gay/straight alliance and asked me to be the advisor. I talked a fellow teacher into co-advising with me, and as much as I really want to do it, the idea still makes me a little nervous.

When I was in high school I suggested having a GSA, but not a single staff member was willing to help with it in a high school in a conservative rural area.
When I was student teaching, one of the schools I was at was just starting up one, and the staff members who were responsible for it were clearly nervous about it too. They were very hands off on the whole thing and were more or less there to supervise the group, but let the group do it's thing and have the staff member to sign off on the necessary things for it.
I think the group later lost steam and fell apart though.
