When Ueda left, Ryo wondered what it would be like if they ever met again. Would he remember him? Would there be awkwardness or would they be able to pick up where they left off? Would Ueda still feel the same way about Ryo or would things have changed?

These thoughts ran through his head, every day for two years until Ryo was simply walking down the street to meet up with Jin for a lunch date. He turned the corner and stopped to see a thin man with well-groomed hair standing with his back to a storefront. He had a briefcase in his hand and he looked like he was waiting for someone.

Ryo did a double take and when he saw those eyes, he was sure of whom that man was.

“Tatsuya,” he whispered to himself, somehow hoping that the sound would transfer to Ueda’s ears. But there was no indication of such, as Ueda was quick to leave when he saw whom he was waiting for pull up to the curb to pick him up.

In a blink of an eye, Ryo had missed his chance to get those unsettling questions answered. He wasn’t sure to make of it, especially when Jin came running over to them so they could go eat together. He ignored Jin’s greetings and kept thinking about how Ueda looked so different. He seemed haggard, tired, and looked about twice as old as he really was.

Or maybe it wasn’t Ueda he’d seen. Maybe his mind was playing tricks on him. Maybe there was some sort of subconscious detailing that misled him.

That was the thing about Ueda. He made Ryo unsure of himself in various ways and mediums. There was always some feeling of uncertainty that sat in the back of Ryo’s mind.

But then there were times where he was completely sure of himself, his thoughts, feelings, or whatever it was.

“It’s good to see you again, Tatsuya,” he said, an unsure smile on his face and an overall innocent expression.

Ueda smiled at him, seeming unsure, himself.

“Nice to see you too, Ryo. I didn’t expect to see you here, of all places.”

The two were standing outside of Ueda’s apartment building in a busy part of the city. Ryo had happened upon it by mere chance, or maybe it was something else that led him there.

“Yeah, I didn’t know you lived here. I mean, I live only a few blocks away-h-how long have you lived here?”

“It’ll be a year in a few weeks. Yeah, when I got the job I have now, I was able to afford a place like this. Oh it’s beautiful. And the view is-what? What’s wrong?”

Ryo chuckled, putting his hands in his pockets and lowering his gaze so Ueda wouldn’t see the teary look in his eyes.

“I would’ve thought that after all this time, we’d run into each other at least once. I mean, we live so close and everything.”

“I didn’t expect to see you today, that’s for sure. I never thought I would see you again.”

Ryo wanted to say the same, but he knew he’d be lying. Ever since, Ueda had left, there was never a time where he wouldn’t expect him to show up, even if it was out of nowhere. He expected it, to say the least. The only thing he wasn’t sure of was how Ueda would react upon seeing him. Too many scenarios played in his head for him to ever know exactly how Ueda would appear to him when they met again.

The scenario that always stuck out to him was the one where Ueda didn’t even remember who he was.

“It’s almost spooky, I guess,” was all he could manage. He didn’t want to appear too deep in thought. This was to be as casual and as comfortable as he could make it.

“Ryo-if I can be honest-I want to let you know that I’ve missed you. I’ve had every intention of looking you up, but with my job, I’ve never really had the time. It’s been a crazy two years. I just want you to know-I never forgot you. I won’t ever forget you and I-”

Ryo wouldn’t let him speak any more and interrupted him with a single kiss. He held Ueda close, but just far enough so that if he rejected him, there would be no real struggle. The distance was unnecessary because Ueda leaned into him, pulling him in and holding him the way he used to hold Ryo all those years ago.

When they pulled apart, it wasn’t sudden as if they didn’t expect it. It was slowly as if there was no time that had passed since the last time they had kissed. In fact, it was like they’d been together all along.

For the first time, Ryo had actually felt safe. There were no insecurities, no uncertainties, no bad thoughts that made him feel like Ueda would leave again.

He would stay that way, as long as Ueda never forgot him.
