I come with stupid, stupid questions. Please help!

As I'm sure I've mentioned at some point or another, I'm doing a part-time French degree. For one of the modules, I have an extended essay to write on a topic of my choice; basically, I'm writing about female homosexuality (and representations thereof) in francophone comics/graphic novels ( Read more... )

I'm a bit out of touch with my comics (again) but Renee Montoya is an out lesbian character in DC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renee_Montoya) and I think Mystique might well qualify in Marvel-verse (depending what they've decided her and Destiny's relationship was).

Also, do you want me to pass this on to any of the more comic booky people I know?

Marvel never seem to be able to decide what they want anything to mean, let alone lesbian relationships, so who can say what they think about Mystique!

And if you don't mind, yep - the more responses I can get together, the more unblocked my ridiculous writing process could potentially become.

And, really, thanks!

I don't read many comics, so I can't comment on that part, but Jezebel did do a call for lesbian stereotypes and their results are here: http://jezebel.com/5205953/pssst-the-girls-guide-to-lesbian-cliches--stereotypes

As for number three, I guess it would depend on the network? Shows like White Collar have a gay character, but you never meet her partner, though you know she exists. And there's always Buffy, which seemed progressive at the time (I guess? I watched it for one year and that was the Seth Green year). Mostly I think TV plays into stereotypes. And fanon bleeds into canon enough that sometime I don't know when one stops and the other begins.

Oh! And if you're willing to lose a lot of time, there's always TVtropes: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/QueerAsTropes

Oh, as for stereotypes, Marvel had a lesbian character once who had the codename Man-Killer. She was a member of the Femizons, I think. Trololol.

My only real contribution to this, comics wise, is that I know that in 'The Authority', there were two lesbian characters when the original team were replaced. I can't remember their names, though, and they were not really filled out enough as characters for me to comment on them as sterotypes (or not). All I really recall is one of the male characters victimising one of them because she wouldn't have sex with him, but then, he was very much 'the bad guy' and his behaviour was not really intended to endear him to anyone. >_>.
