Network question for my techy-inclined friends...

OK - so in this new condo in Phoenix, I don't want to run a bunch of cat-5 everywhere. I have a second bedroom that I'm going to use as an office where my computer (laptop) and Brad's computer (desktop) will reside. Mine will wirelessly access the router, while his will be a cat-5. The modem and router will live in this room. However, I also ( Read more... )

Use some sort of wireless bridge like

plug a router into that, then plug the wired devices into the router.

You don't need a router to plug the bridge into. The bridge plugs directly into your devices and then converts to wireless. However, they aren't cheap. You are better off purchasing a sub $80 wireless router and setting it up to bridge to the main router. You need to make sure the router supports this mode however, usually you will find this on Linksys and Netgear fairly standard. It may be refered to by more than one name, usually referred to as extender mode or some such.

This is, unfortunately, not a problem that can be solved cheaply. The cheapest solution is still to just run cat 5 under the carpet, which, in my opinion, isn't a really a solution, just another problem.

Yeah... I discovered that the PS3 has wireless built in. So the only thing left is the Blue-Ray, which isn't worth the cost to network and I'm not running CAT-5 cause that's just ugly. LOL

AFAIK, unless you've got the 20 gig PS3, wireless is built in to all the models.

You, I discovered the wireless this morning when I was waiting on the cable guy. So the only thing I have to network is my Blue-Ray, which I'm not really worried too much about. /shrug
