Someone once told me that slash was the western equivalent of yaoi. For example, Harry Potter featuring m/m would be called "Harry Potter slash" not "Harry Potter yaoi".
In fact, I seem to remember a rant on fanficrants about someone using "yaoi" in a Harry Potter fic summary.
::ponders Bagel's words:: I vaguely remember seeing slash in warnings more often with real-life people involved, now that I REALLY think hard. So...maybe that's a little bit of the difference?
