Character: William, Maggie Scully
A/N: “Somewhere, beyond the sea…”
Maggie loves watching her grandson despite the fact that she’s exhausted and grateful at the end of the night, when he’s soft and clean and wearing the UFO pajamas that his father sent him in the mail last week, with no return address. She places William in his crib, fondly recalling the countless nights that she put her own babies to bed. William watches inquisitively as her slender fingers wind the music box she always brings.
The tune is sickly, sad, but she listens.
Her eyes drift shut of their own volition as Bill takes her hand and they dance at their wedding, like they do every night in her mind, even after all these years. The ring he saved up for 2 years to buy her still glistens on her finger. She has it cleaned once a month, to keep it alive.
It serves to remind her that once, she was truly happy as the lover of a man who was often gone.
The creak of the rocking chair ceases as she dozes off, and the music box tinkles its last note. After a few moments of silence, William whimpers, and it starts up again.
A/N 2: I got this idea because I was looking up what kind of tunes you could play in a music box, and Beyond the Sea was one of them. Although I think as a tinkly, slow tune, it could sound melancholy. Or, at least, that's how I hear it. :) This is also the first time I've had some major trouble staying under the word limit. Maggie's pretty interesting to write.
