Parts of my family are close like that. My mom, sister and I are like that - spend a lot of time together, live in the same area generally. Well Mom, Sis and Dad all live in the same town now and I live 30 miles away. I think my Dad would like to have that closeness but Sis and I both have had our ups and downs with him.
I think sometimes it's hard for our families to see us as we are - as the individual adults we have become. Because they have been there the whole time, and have already formed their opinions of us. That is annoying because they expect us to always be the same way as we were at one time and never let us forget it.
My step-siblings have all moved away. One is in Tennessee, another in Oregon. Well one is only an hour away but she is not speaking to anyone anyway so we don't see her (fine with me).

Are you oldest? Youngest? Middle????
I think you're right about family not being able to see us as adults.
Are your step-siblings from your dad's side? Mom's side????

Comparing the conflicts I saw with preschoolers and the conflicts I see with "adults", they're pretty much the same.
People rarely get that much more mature.
Little children often yell out. "I'm mad at you! I'm not inviting you to my birthday party!"
Adults do the same thing. They change just the words a little bit.
