David heard the crash from the other room, and he looked up from his reading. As he pulled off his glasses, he heard, very small,
"uh oh"
He couldn't help but smile, and he knew that at the other end of the house Chris was smiling too.
Book and glasses set aside, David pushed up and went out to investigate. As he had expected, Michael sat on the floor beside the table, a woebegone look on his face as water dripped into a puddle beside him.
"What happened little man?" David said as he squatted down beside his son.
"break" Michael whispered.
"It didn't break," David said, and he scooped Michael up, rested him on his hip and let him see that the flower vase had fallen over, but that it was not broken. "Were you throwing your ball?"
Michael shoved a tiny fist into his mouth and nodded.
"And you're not supposed to, are you," David said.
Michael shook his head, and then leaned in against David, fitting his head below David's chin.
"Flirting doesn't fix the problem," David said. "Daddy Chris bought these flowers, we'll have to clean them up."
"mad" Michael whispered.
From the shadows of the doorway, Chris smiled, and stepped through into the room. He reached for Michael and took him from David's arms. "I'm not mad little man," he said, "you just have to be more careful."
David opened his arms and folded them both in against him. "We'll all be more careful."
