All the comments are very much appreciated.  Kayla died at around 3 am Saturday morning.  I moved her onto her bed when I arrived home a little after 4, covered her up and let her pack come to her.  Rocks laid up against her, one paw over her body.  Later in the morning I took her to the humane society, where she will receive a private cremation.

It is very hard to lose a pet that has been your company for so long, and not easy to console in this time of grief. Hope it helps to think that when we outlive our pets, they get to have the best life all the way to the end and that might not be the case if we go first. I haven't been here in a long time, and am not sure what made me visit today. Sorry for your loss.
