Well, I think she is genuinely concerned that (as she sees it) her granddaughters have coldly not called or made efforts to find out anything about their families. I can understand that this e-mail from granny upsets you, but try to see that she holds/held you in the highest regards when it comes to being a perfect, wonderful, caringand compassionate individual. So when the response that she only naturally expects from you at a time of natural disaster didn't come, she was kinda let down. I see her side, and don't think you should be mad at her. Maybe respond sayng you would have liked to get in contact and check on your family, but your scholastic needs preempted that. This may be the only way to gently handle the situation - though I'm not completely sure, being as how I don't know your granny that well.
