SG-1: Major Character Death (Meta on Meridian)

Jan 12, 2017 17:42

On the off-chance someone new to SG-1 wants to read this post, this contains pretty heavy spoilers for the end of Season 5 and beginning of Season 6.

I watched "Meridian," "Revelations," and the beginning of Season 6 earlier this week and I have to say, ( this is how you handle character death )

fandom:sg-1, sg-1 is the best thing ever

I wanted to cruise on past this entry when it popped up while I was wrestling the debrief, but I just couldn't. It's no secret that I dislike this episode for all the grief and wrongness about it, but not for the acting or even, I guess, the future character arc it gave Daniel. Though we weren't to know at the time that he would return ( ... )

Oh yes, I was always coming at this episode with the gift of hindsight. I wasn't introduced to SG-1 until after the 7th season was announced and we knew Daniel was coming back. (Information that was given to me upfront, spoilers be damned, apparently.)

I can't imagine how it felt to have Daniel written out of the show and have no idea if he was ever going to return. I certainly understand fan frustration at the time-especially given the behind-the-scenes stuff going on. I try not to let my behind-the-scenes knowledge affect my read of the show (too much), but there are some things in which it's difficult.

No judgement from me for folks who can't get past that Jonas was "Emergency Replacement Daniel." There are many times in which the writing also treated him that way, and there are some episodes (like "The Other Guys," for example) in which I have to work to see Jonas as a character and not an SG-1 accessory.

No, that's not how to handle a beloved character death imo, not introducing the new character, basically a copy, who said that he wouldn't speak for Daniel even if he wanted, in the same episode and the following...The only thing I liked about Revelations was Jack grief, him all alone on the ship cleaning his weapon and the ruffle at the end.
