Black Friday

Nov 28, 2009 04:17

I did go out shopping on Black Friday, but only thrift stores. I don't get the rabid frenzy of it all, especially the weirdos with the matching team t-shirts saying "Shop 'til you drop." I certainly don't think it's worth trampling a man to death. I don't know if there were any fatalities this year. Thrift stores definitely aren't places where " ( Read more... )

I don't get Black Friday. It's alien too me in so many ways. We have had a touch of it here, with the post-Christmas sales, but after a year or two of people getting trampled, largely, Australian thought the better of it.

I assume you have the post-Christmas sales too?

(I am jealous of the cat gym. There is just nowhere here you could get that).

Dried spinich powder sounds awful.

We have them, but they really don't generate the rabid hysteria like the thanksgiving weekend.T-giving weekend is usually a 4 day weekend for most people giving them plenty of time to shop. By X-mas people are too broke to buy anything, except with gift cards.

The cats are really enjoying it too. They are playing "king of the carpeted cylinder" right now:

Spinach Powder theevilchemist November 28 2009, 19:17:05 UTC
I guess it's an "acquired taste." I crave spinach so much now, that I'd eat 3lbs in 5 days. The powder in Orange juice is great, but I am going to have to do weekly blood-lettings, b/c my iron is high from all the Vit C I drink with iron containing foods. When they say plant iron isn't absorbed, they sure aren't testing on vegans who eat 3g of Vit C/day in foods.

. I just want to be in my own little world like that last man on earth in that Twilight zone episode, but without breaking my glasses. :)

IIRC, Time Enough At Last, starring Burgess Merideth (aka The Penguin).
I only watched it a few months back.
It's a classic.

When I was little, that episode was one of my favorites, b/c I imagined exploring the world completely unencumbered and that seemed really cool to a 10 year old.

As long as I can occupy myself I can go month at a time without wanting to hang out with anyone. I guess the internet is considered "Human interaction" so I guess I'm not a hermit in purest form. At least I can ignore the computer whenever I need to.

It's one of the earliest episodes, on the first DVD IIRC.

It's the Friday after Thanksgiving Holiday Here, and the biggest shopping day of the X-mas season. The stores open at 5am, but now some open at Midnight, and there are crazy deals like $3 (2EU) toasters, $78 (52Eu) blue-ray players, Fully loaded laptops for $200(130EU), but there are only a few in each store, so people push shove, punch each other to get them.

There are usually a few fatalities each year from it and a lot of injuries. Here's the Wikipedia article on it.

The stores are all full of ravenous mobs.

I eat Them! theevilchemist November 28 2009, 23:38:34 UTC
The Lotus seeds I put in a pressure cooker like beans and eat them in soup. They have a very nice texture this way.

That's Picasso. He's an "affection Bully". Whenever I pet his sister, Wonton, he pushes her out of the way and places himself under my hand. He's the most "uncat" cat I've ever met. He never lands on his feet, and I can easily push him over on his side when he walks by. There are a funny pair. Good bed warmers in the winter. :)

I love thrift stores. They're one of tools that allow me to stay home with my children this year.
I love pantries. That would be my second tool. I stock up on the excellent sales and top up my pantry/small chest freezer. Last week was buy one get one free on hummus, roast beef, whole chicken and onions.

My daughter Lily said to me the other day "Salvation Army is so much better than other toy shops. It's like an adventure every time!"

I always say it's like going on a treasure Hunt. There's stuff there you will never find in retail stores. Some of it is from other countries or 40 years old.
