Chapter 1
The desert is silent.
It’s not a nice silence. It’s more of a deadly one.
Of course there was never much life here but back then there were animals. Now it’s just … dead.
It wasn’t always like this. Many years ago the world was okay. There were cities full of people. There was even overpopulation, but now?
Everything started going down when the humans started to discover the existence of vampires.
They tried to fight them but those creatures just got better at hiding.
More and more humans got turned to the point where there were more vampires than humans.
The vampires needed to feed and so there were less and less humans till there weren’t enough to keep the creatures alive.
Many vampires died as well, so now, there are just very few vampires left and even fewer humans populating the whole world.
It’s not really the end of the world yet but many call it that already.
Brendon opens his eyes and looks around.
The sun finally starts to set so he gets out of the tiny hole he was hiding in.
It’s not that the sun would kill him. No, those days are over. He just doesn’t like it when the sun burns down on him.
The very first vampires weren’t able to survive sunlight but, as always, time changed them.
Brendon sighs and stretches. He’s feeling dizzy and his mind tells him to just lie down again but he knows that he would not survive that.
He didn’t feed in weeks, maybe months, he can’t remember.
He takes everything in. The dying plants, the red hills, the yellow sand.
His feet start walking without him noticing and soon it’s completely dark outside.
A human would be freezing by now but Brendon doesn’t feel anything.
His teeth are aching, his mouth slightly open in a try to find a scent that would lead him to his next meal.
He finds nothing though. His legs keep getting him further but his surroundings still look the same.
Nothing changes.
He walks all night. At some point he reaches an old road. It’s a bad idea to follow it. There might be other vampires or even humans around and he was alone after all.
He does it anyway and after a while he blinks as the sun starts to rise.
This was his last chance. He knows it.
His knees give out so he slumps to the ground.
A low whimper escapes him and one hand holds his stomach.
So this is it then, he thinks and closes his eyes.
The world will lose another monster. The humans will be glad.
His body falls to the side but he doesn’t care.
Maybe death is better than this.
When he feels he’s about to pass out there’s a faint scent, barely there but Brendon is sure he isn’t imagining it.
His eyes open and there it is.
An old diner at the end of the road.
He opens his mouth and now the scent is definitely there.
Human
At that realization his body reacts on its own. He gets up and stumbles towards it. He feels a bit ashamed to let the monster inside of him take over like that but he can’t care at the moment. He just thinks about the need to stay alive or rather the fear of actually dying.
When he reaches the door he falls against it, pushing it open that way.
His eyes scan the room, searching for what he’s looking for.
There’s a thick layer of dust covering everything and the tiny bar is rusty.
He freezes when he hears a noise, his eyes moving to the door leading to the kitchen.
Against his will an evil smile covers his face as he stumbles over to it, pushing it open slowly.
Inside is just an old rusty kitchen and for a moment he thinks that his mind is playing tricks on him but then he sees him.
A boy.
He got his back turned to Brendon and is pulling at something.
The vampire steps closer to see that the boy’s hands are wrapped around the handle of a cupboard.
Brendon takes a deep breath, taking in the boy’s scent.
That’s when he loses it.
He lungs forward and grabs the kid’s shoulders, pushing him into the next wall.
A whimper escapes the boy but Brendon can’t care less as he lets his teeth sink through the skin of his neck.
He moans as the liquid fills his mouth. Blood never tasted this good.
The boy starts struggling but Brendon just tightens his grip and keeps drinking, feeling himself grow stronger.
It feels like ages went by when the vampire finally draws back.
The boy slumps to the floor, holding his bleeding throat.
Brendon licks his lips and observes him.
His hair is a light brown color and slightly curly. He’s staring up at Brendon with wide frightened, kinda honey-colored eyes.
The vampire narrows his eyes and crouches down in front of him, watching him like he’s some kind of fascinating animal.
The boy whimpers and Brendon smiles, his hand reaching out to touch.
His victim shies away and shuts his eyes tightly.
The vampire’s smile widens.
Such a helpless, fragile creature.
“P-please” the boy whimpers and Brendon chuckles.
“What?” he purrs, touching the human’s cheek.
He doesn’t get an answer so he gets up and makes to turn around just when a thought occurs to him. He thinks for a moment before looking at the boy again whose eyes dropped shut again.
“Hey, boy” he says and the kid’s eyes open a bit. “You wanna live?”
He nods quickly, still holding onto his ripped throat.
Brendon thinks about it for another minute before he reaches down to pull the boy up, attaching his mouth to his throat again, this time to lick the wound which heals quickly.
He draws back, his hands still supporting the human.
“What’s your name?”
“Ryan” the kid mumbles, still looking completely frightened.
“Are you on your own, Ryan?”
Ryan nods and Brendon eyes him up and down.
“You won’t make it very long.” He states then and Ryan just sobs.
The vampire sighs before he continues.
“You need safety and I need to feed from time to time.” He explains slowly.
Ryan nods slightly, staring at the floor
“Let’s make a deal.” Brendon finally says and Ryan looks up at him.
“W-what deal?”
“I will make sure nothing happens to you and in return.” He stops for a moment. “…you let me feed off you.”
Ryan’s eyes widen a bit.
“What?” he squeaks and presses even closer to the wall in a try to disappear into it.
“I guess that’s a no?” Brendon asks and sighs. “What a shame. Well, happy surviving.”
Brendon turns and makes an attempt on leaving. He stops though and grabs the handle of the cupboard Ryan tried to open earlier.
The vampire pulls it open so the whole thing crashes to the ground.
It’s filled with chocolate bars and some other sweets.
Ryan’s eyes go wide. He’s starving, Brendon knows.
“You’re going to die in here. Either because another vampire finds you or because of starvation.” Brendon growls.
Ryan swallows and keeps staring at the food.
They don’t move for a while before Ryan slowly reaches out to grab one chocolate bar.
Brendon watches him as he eats quickly and reaches out for the next.
Eventually he sighs and turns to leave.
He walks out of the kitchen and stops for a moment before he leaves the diner.
He’s walking for five minutes when he hears footsteps. A smile covers his face because he knows it’s Ryan. He doesn’t turn around though and just keeps walking.
Hours pass and at sone point Brendon decides to leave the road and walks right into the open desert again.
Ryan stops for a moment before following again.
