There has been much irresponsible speculation as to what this announcement could be...anywhere from "Turning into a professional poker player" to "Kelley's pregnant" to the mundane "Brian's taking a nap". Booooooooooooo - you guys are way off the mark...but first, let's set it up a little bit here.
For the last 3-4 years or so, I've been playing in a regular pickup game down in my work's gym during my Wednesday lunch hour. Three days a week, pickup games are going on at my work, but it is on this day is when the so-called "best of the best" ballers from the office show up and play, and since I am one who believes that one way to get better at a sport or a game is to play with people better than you, I liked playing in these games. Some players in these games played a little D2 and D3 college ball, but no one takes themselves too seriously here, either.
Now I'm not about to claim that I'm actually any good at this game, but I must admit that I have a sweet outside shot, am a better-than-average passer, can run the point in an up-tempo offense...and basically do enough "little things" to make me a pretty valuable part of the team.
The last 2 or 3 months, however, I've noticed a marked decrease in my game. Now, I can still shoot the rock well, but at 37 and playing with "kids" in their 20s, I feel rather old and slow around most of these guys. Add in some knee and foot problems that I've been accumulating over the last year or so, and you have a situation where the desire to play is still there, but my body is telling me otherwise.
After playing last week, I decided that today's games would be my last. I got to play in 2 games today - and while I'd love to be able to say that I had an ending fit for a movie, but that didn't happen. I did knock down my last 2 3-balls, at least (forget about the first 5 bricks I had before that), and I did walk off the court victorious...that was rather satisfying.
Usually, when someone leaves this particular game, we'll hear all it beforehand, and it's usually due to upcoming job changes. With me, I just told one of my fellow co-workers that I wouldn't be playing next week, or any other week after today, and that was that.
So, that's it - as of today, I'm officially retired from my work's pickup basketball game
Now about that nap, that sounds real good right about now......
