"Too often people do not critically examine why they believe what they do, which seems to be the state of discourse in America today."

A friend said that and I have to agree.

Yeah, some people don't know that Fox News tells them what to think.

But if you don't believe what Fox News says then you will turn into a Socialist hippie liberal gay Muslim atheist commie who hates America and wants the terrorist to win

The problem is that this crazy ultra conservative thinking is popular. I don't understand it at all.. I did hear that if this freakishly conservative view was not as popular, Fox News would have an immediate over-night switch to liberal content. Wouldn't that be amusing?

I think if Fox news did that I would be wondering what I took to end up the permanent acid trip.

I honestly don't think the thinking is quite as popular as the media in general makes out to be and I think most of it is just a back lash reaction to the massive changes that have occurred over the past 16-20 years and people are jumping to the one extreme to try and off set the other. I think most people still fall just a little shy of the middle and those who are the more extreme ends just get the air time.

But yeah Fox is freaking insane crazy but on the upside they keep Fark full of headlines!

I concur with your friend whole-heartedly!

A major reason why I am so proud of my leftwing leanings is that I took the time to research and assess the roots of these beliefs, including altering my beliefs when research showed them to be founded upon superficial or naive reasoning that had taken on power through empty repetition.

I swore to myself I would never be one of the American majority whose liberal and conservative statements derive mostly from habit, comfort zone neediness, and a listless apathy.

(An ironic note: in my research, I found that the roots of American liberalism and conservatism are both based on the very same books -- with one exception.   No wonder Europeans think that American liberals and conservatives are more alike than different!)

When I was studying the influence of folklore and mythological thinking on American social issues for my degree, I came across some interesting studies ( ... )
