It was with aprehension, and not a little suspicion, that Severus opened the single gift awaiting him on Christmas morning. He smiled wryly as he read the tag - perhaps he had been a touch too ...touchy... about the whole holiday ordeal - and found that he was genuinely pleased with the book. The gift itself was nice, but what, he discovered to his surprise, was nicer was the knowledge that another human being knew him well enough to choose it for him.

With that thought in mind, he dragged his trunk out from beneath the bed, and took from underneath the clothes an unwrapped, handmade book. The title, written in his own sharp handwriting, read; "100 Handy Hexes they won't Teach you at Hogwarts". Without giving himself time for second thoughts, Severus ran his free hand through his hair, dragged a pair of black trousers on, deciding to change the old oxford shirt he slept in later, and went across to Lily's room, book in hand as he knocked on the door.

A bag of flour had seemed to violently attack Lily's clothes, it could have been that or the fact that petunia knocked the measuring cup out of her hand and onto herself. Now as Lily ran about her room searching for her mum's cookbook which she swore wouldn't be in her room, because why would? All the same, the book had to be found.

Hearing a small knock, Lily went to pull the door all the way open. "Sev, more often than not you can just walk in. I don't mind" She said with a smile spotting the book out of the corner of her eye laying on her bookself.

Severus stood in the open doorway, and gave Lily a once over, one eyebrow rising as he took in the white powder she had apparently rolled in.

"I see. And on those rare occasions when I can't, how do you propose to let me know so that I don't take you at your word and just waltz into your bedroom?" he enquired dryly, stepping into the room and casting a wandless cleaning charm over Lily. When your hobby of choice was potions, you learned that one fast.

With a sigh he set the book on her bed, before walking over and removing the cookbook from where it was held loosely in her hands. "Judging by your performance in potions, I think it might be safest if you weren't left in charge of a kitchen." His tone was light, almost teasing as he began to flip through the book, so intent on the recipes that he forgot, for a moment, his own awkwardness.

"I'll leave the door ajar when you can com right in. All other times it will be closed." She said dusting off herself after he did the quick charm. "Were planning on coming in at some odd hour of the night asking for another quill?"

Lily closed the cookbook in his hands, slowly sliding it out of them. "That's the reason I'll never cook for you. " She said smiling, lips pursed. "You have no faith and you wouldn't eat anything." She clasped the book close to her chest and folded her arm across. "Is there any particular reason you've come to be critical of my baking?"
