Episode 9 - History

Jan 13, 2006 00:37

[Starts in blackness. Music, in the style of a lullaby, plays softly as the camera pans around the room. This room is Jonah's room, but he is only seven years old. After panning around, we come to Jonah as he sits on his bed. He turns towards the camera, with a smile on his face, and cuddles up tighter to his teddy bear.]

[With a sour chord, there is a flash of Jonah, wearing pajamas, standing next to his 13 year old brother, Alex, who lies in bed. Alex reaches out and grabs Jonah's arm. Jonah, in his vision, is screaming helplessly. As quickly as it was there, it's gone, and Jonah's look of contentment is slightly troubled.]

[Another sour chord, and this flash is a little longer. After the chords, a violin solo plays melodramatically. Alex is coughing and shaking in bed, while Jonah shouts, silently, "Alex, Alex," and then calls out for mommy and daddy. He runs out of the room and intercepts his parents, who were on their way into the room. The father goes and checks Alex's pulse, who is now lying mysteriously still with eyes wide open. Jonah's mother holds a crying Jonah, who keeps saying "no, no." Mrs. Winters is trying not to cry. The father stands up, and turns to them.]

Mr. Winters: He's de-

[Jonah sits up in his bed, sweating and panting.]

[Cut to Jonah coming down the stairs in his pajamas. His mother is sitting at the table drinking coffee, while his father is sitting at the other end reading the paper. The mother looks up and notices Jonah.]

Mrs. Winters: You're up early, Jonah

Jonah: I had a bad dream.

Mr. Winters:[Not even looking up] What, did the boogeyman get you?

Mrs. Winters:[admonishingly] Mark! [sweeter, to Jonah] Come here ...

[Jonah walks across the room and climbs into his mother's lap. She hugs him. Mark puts down the paper and goes over to talk to them too.]

Mrs. Winters: What was your dream?

Jonah: I dreamt ... I dreamt that Alex died.

[Mr. and Mrs. Winters exchange a knowing look, and then look back at Jonah.]

Mr. Winters: Jonah, it was just a dream. We know your brother is sick, but he'll be fine. He always gets better. You don't have to worry about it Jonah.

Jonah: I don't know ... it didn't feel like a dream. It felt so real.

Mrs. Winters: Come on, let's go see Alex.

[Cut to Alex's room. Alex is asleep as Jonah and his mother enter the door.]

Mrs. Winters:[softly] Alex?

[Alex stirs and slowly opens his eyes.]

Mrs. Winters: How do you feel?

Alex: Tired. Thirsty.

Mrs. Winters: I'll go get you something to drink.

[Mrs. Winters goes to get something to drink, leaving the two brothers alone. In the background is a picture of the family.]

Alex:[slowly trying to sit up] What's up, little man? How are you feeling?

Jonah: I'm fine.

Alex: Well, that's always good ... news...

[Suddenly in pain, Alex grabs his forehead. With his other hand, he grabs Jonah's wrist. Jonah screams, with a look in his eyes like he knows what's going to happen next. Alex screams and lies back down, trying to breathe deep. After two breaths, he starts to cough and shake]

Jonah: Alex, Alex, let go of me.

Alex: [In between coughs] Go get mom and dad.

Jonah: [Looking dreadfully at his brother.] Mommy! Daddy!

[He runs out. He intercepts his parents. Everything happens like in the dream.]

Mr. Winters: He's dead.

[Mrs. Winters starts to cry, and Mr. Winters comes to hold her. Jonah has stopped crying, but is still very troubled. The camera zooms in on him.]

Jonah: [softly] It was real ...
