Summer Reading List (now stickied for great justice)

Street of a thousand blossoms / Gail Tsukiyama.
Teahouse fire / Ellis Avery.
Ramayana : a dramatic retelling of the great Indian epic / David Farr.
Mahabharata : a shortened modern prose verion of the Indian epic / by R.K. Narayan
Way too ambitious, considering the summer's a month gone. )

Of those, I have read JS&MN. It is awesome and british and slow and full of delicious footnote-y goodness.

Also, the Ramayana is very high on my to-read list, because I freaking love Epics.

Some faculty member has checked JS&MN out where I work, so it's not due back until 2010. I think I'll file a petition to recall it once I'm done with the books I have out now.

Ramayana is a fun read, except for the last chapter which is strongly suspected of being apocryphal (i.e. not written by Valmiki). It's also terrible and engages in a lot of self-righteous moralizing character derailment shenanigans.
