The one exception: I would have no problem rescuing an animal from one of those horrible roadside "zoos" and getting it to a proper animal sanctuary. For example, there is a tiger named Tony who was chained at a gas station in Louisiana. That was sort of in a "zoo"; his owners had a license and everything. He couldn't be released into the wild, but there are better places for him to be, and I regularly donate to one of them. He was just released, and I think they're trying to find a place for him, but big cat sanctuaries--real ones--are usually full to the brim with apex predators that someone thought would be a cool pet. It's a shame.
But people who just want to "set the animals freeeee!!!11!! are nuts.
Oh yes, I agree. My definition of 'zoo' up there pretty much applies to sanctuaries and environments designed for the animals specifically. Zoos do not need to chain their animals.
