In Character Information

character name: Loras Tyrell
Fandom: A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones
Timeline: his canon point is Storm of Swords, shortly after meeting with Jaime and the Kingsguard
character's age: I would like to use his age in the show, if that's all right? which would be somewhere in the realm of 19. otherwise, 17.

powers, skills, pets and equipment:
Loras is widely considered to be among the best fighters in the realm, and arguably the best tournament knight. He is skilled in a variety of different forms of (medieval Western European style) combat utilizing a number of different weapons, although he favors a sword on foot and a lance on horseback. He is likewise an extremely competent horseman, as evidenced by success in jousting.

Additionally, the mists will cause him to develop a sort of affinity for flowering plants. They will put out new blooms in his presence and grow significantly larger. This will increase in strength when he is experiencing strong emotion. With practice (and he will practice), he will be able to develop this into a more general ability to manipulate living plant matter.

He will arrive in white armor and a white cloak with a sword at his belt. His cloak will be fastened with an elaborate golden brooch shaped like a rose.

personality:
On the surface, Loras is almost a perfect storybook knight, and indeed he does take all that chivalry business very seriously. His manners are impeccable and he has a great aptitude for bold, courtly gestures. His armor is beautifully made and well-maintained, and his curls are actually glossy. Beneath his genteel exterior, however, lies a cunning but impatient young man with a sharp tongue and an even sharper sword. In certain company, he can be a downright gossip. Few people get to see that side of Loras, though.

He is of course fiercely loyal, and willing to fight to the death for the people he loves. He is also willing to transgress social norms for their sake, which can in rare cases include going against the sort of chivalric code he lives by, sometimes even inspiring him to bloody rage. He's not above plots and intrigue, but he's a little too hotheaded to be really excellent at them without his more sensible relations to keep him in line. He can be somewhat forward-thinking when it suits him--he's had to be in order to maintain such a high degree of agency in such an oppressively heteronormative society as Westeros, and his family had a habit of indulging and rewarding cleverness even when it might not be entirely appropriate. Spending most of his adolescence running around with a similarly clever lord only a few years his senior with little adult supervision likely served to aggravate the problem.

Since Renly's death, though, he's become much more jaded and cynical, although you'd likely never notice it from talking to him. He is still very much in mourning and very much in love. On a less personal level, he fights for Highgarden now, and his family, where once he might have fought for the good of the realm. That is not to say he cares nothing for the people outside his immediate circle, but that his ultimate priority is maintaining their safety--he would not, for instance, urge Renly to seek the throne at this point in time, and he is willing to accuse a young girl he knows to be innocent of murder in order to keep suspicion off of his family (although whether he would do so were her whereabouts known to the court remains unclear).

But while he's given up the bulk of his political ambition, he's retained his enormous drive to excel. He is determined to make the best of his abilities, and practices every day to keep them sharp. This allows him a certain measure of arrogance, as he feels he has every right to be proud of what he has worked so hard to achieve. This, combined with the ordinary cockiness found in handsome young men, can make him almost unbearable at times. His careful manners are his saving grace--unless he doesn't like you, of course.

why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting?
While Loras may come across as rather high maintenance and a little bit spoiled, he is in fact surprisingly resourceful and adaptable so long as his basic needs are met. It will be interesting to see him struggle to achieve and maintain the standards of living he is used to, particularly in a setting full of exciting new weapons technology and fancy hats. I'm also interested in seeing how he reacts to the shift in social norms from a medieval European-inspired society to a Victorian one, as well as how he would respond to the more supernatural elements of the game. He will have no problem fighting monsters, at least!
