In-Character Information
Name : Frank Jaeger a.k.a. Gray Fox
Game/Series: Metal Gear
Teacher/Student/Other: Student
Canon Point: Post-MPO, pre-Metal Gear
Age: 39
Grade Level/Class Taught/Job: College student
Dorm or Living Arrangement: Apartment

Personality:
At first glance, Frank is a very stoic man. He doesn't let his emotions show, if he feels any at all (probably due to the repeated conditioning of his senses in the Perfect Soldier Project). He is almost always frank-er, I mean, blunt, in speech. He is a particularly “closed” person and does not open up to or trust people easily at all. This is due to his upbringing as a soldier: Never trust anyone. Always watch your back. This isn't to say Frank doesn't make friends at all; it just takes a lot to earn his respect, and a lot to overcome his intimidating appearance (big trenchcoat, weirdly formed nose and ears, piercing blue eyes and ash gray hair-scary! Monster! Get away!).

Frank can be somewhat of a mother hen, especially towards Naomi. He dotes on Naomi often and always wants to make her happy, teach her new things and make sure she's cared for. He has a weakness/deep affection for all little girls and will fawn over them quietly if given the chance. This is partly because he has maturity issues in some respects-he identifies with people generations younger than himself, due to his identity issues (Naomi is a “sister”, not a “child”).

He is also incredibly close to Big Boss. Ever since Big Boss rescued him when he was a child, he never forgot him, not even when his memories were cleared repeatedly during the Perfect Soldier Project. Big Boss has been his rock ever since Frank was little, and he trusts him more than anyone else. He is also very devoted to Big Boss and would likely do literally anything for him. Some even say that Frank is in love with Big Boss.

Frank has a deep fear of doctors, hospitals and medical work. He hasn't gone to the hospital in years, and was always anxious when the medics in FOXHOUND treated his wounds after missions. This is because of the profound negative impression the medics in FOX made on him as Null-he hated all the tests and trials performed on him, and he especially hated the whiteness and sterile environment of his stasis tank.

Frank has little to no concept of self/identity. He has still not fully recovered from the intense procedures performed on him in the Perfect Soldier Project, and thinks of himself as a tool of war, nothing more. He wants to have a normal life (he actually had a fling with an ice skater overseas named Gustava Heffner, and hoped to marry her, but she was not allowed to leave her home country) but knows he never will be able to. This is because of his addiction to the thrill of war. Also, he believes so deeply that he is meant to be a soldier that he will never be satisfied being a civilian. War makes Frank happy. The thrill of the fight is the only thing that makes him feel alive. He also has somewhat of a pain fetish.

Frank is afflicted with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and consequently suffers from nightmares often.

Frank's favorite possession is his machete. He is skilled at fighting with machetes, as they were his very first weapon as a child soldier, and he loves his current one. His machete is like... well, like his baby blanket. It's pacifying.

Backstory:
The year is 1953. Frank was born on the battlefield during the Korean War to a Vietnamese woman and an American man. At the age of 5 or 6, being a half-white orphan in Korea, he was sent to a labor camp. Not long after that, he was transferred to Mozambique and was employed as a child soldier, fighting in the Mozambican Revolution within the Liberation Front of Mozambique (FRELIMO). Around this time, he somehow picked up a little German, and his fellow soldiers started calling him “Frank Jaeger”--because he was a hunter (jaeger in German) that killed with the frankness of a little boy.

After fighting with FRELIMO for a good while-about five years-the legendary American soldier Big Boss “rescued” Frank and put him in a rehabilitation facility. Unfortunately, by this time he had a reputation as an amazing killer for his age. Because of this, the CIA (a.k.a. The Philosophers) plucked him from the rehab facility and took him in for their Perfect Soldier Project, a project intended to create the ultimate warrior. This warrior would care about one thing and one thing only: to complete the mission. The perfect soldiers were created by putting a person in a stasis tank which shuts out all their senses, causing them to, upon coming out of the tank, have incredibly heightened senses and reflexes, allowing them to sense the enemy faster and more precisely than a regular soldier. This project lasted for a short time-only four years.

As unlucky as Frank is, he was the only surviving subject of the CIA's intense tests and procedures (most subjects died or went insane under the conditions). By 1970, the CIA gave him the codename Null, due to his being “a lost number.” Being that the Perfect Soldier Project was largely a failure, Null was transferred to the FOX unit of Operation Snake Eater fame under the command of Gene.

After the San Hieronymo Takeover staged by FOX, Big Boss put Frank into rehabilitation yet again and kept a close eye on him this time. ;)

Following his time in rehab, Frank became a mercenary. He joined the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO) and fought in the Mozambican Civil War against his former unit, FRELIMO. During one of his missions, he was captured and tortured badly, having the tips of his nose and ears cut off. He was rescued from FRELIMO roughly two days later by Big Boss. A turning point in Frank's life was during his fight in the Rhodesian Civil War; he killed two civilians, a man and a woman, only to find they had a young child. Feeling guilty, he named the girl Naomi and adopted her as his sister. She would later go on to become a doctor and be involved in the Shadow Moses Incident of 2005. Frank left Naomi in the United States and fought several wars in Africa with Big Boss during the 80's and 90's.

In 1990, Frank joined Big Boss' FOXHOUND, a unit Big Boss founded in the 70's. Frank received the codename Gray Fox, “Fox” being the highest ranking codename a person could get. Frank trained many recruits in FOXHOUND and was a highly decorated and skilled soldier, possibly the closest to Big Boss. Fox takes part in the planning for many FOXHOUND missions, and serves as Big Boss' “assistant.”

In the early 90's, Big Boss divulged to Fox his plan to create Metal Gear TX-55, a giant fighting robot intended to take down the Patriots, an evil(?) organization that controlled all the world's data. He had already created a fortress off the coast of South Africa to house the robot. However, they needed soldiers in their army, and they needed someone to build TX-55. Big Boss had heard of a school that trains kids to fight and is home to budding young geniuses. He wanted to send his best agent to check it out. With Fox's lack of teaching skills, being a student there would provide...the best...cover...?

Anything Else?: Fox might try to recruit some of the younger kids for Outer Heaven.

In-Character 1st person writing sample (journal):
[Frank opens his journal and turns to the first blank page, begins writing:]

Last night I dreamed I was Null again. I keep dreaming that Boss and I have to take down Gene and waking up and believing it is real. I do remember we have a real enemy, right now. Z--- is lightyears ahead of Gene in terms of intellect and ferocity. Gene was just a tool. I'm glad I'm not like him anymore.

The little girl I met yesterday upon arriving here doesn't remind me of Naomi. She's much more straightforward whereas Naomi is shy. At least she used to be last time I saw her; maybe she's opened up. I keep hoping she doesn't take after me and the way I deal with people. I wish she'd take after Boss instead.

Living off-base will be refreshing, I can tell already. Even with how things worked out with Gustava, maybe I can give myself a second chance at a civilian life...

In-Character 3rd person writing post:
Frank sat across the table from Big Boss, holding a steaming mug of coffee in his good hand. Frank was worried; he had performed the best he could, but he sustained several injuries and let the enemy get away alive. That was something that hardly ever happened--however, even the best make mistakes.

"Boss..." he started. "I'm sorry about today. I...I should've been better." For you, he wanted to say. For us. For Outer Heaven.

Frank circled through the moves of the enemy again and again in his head. He wasn't as agile as he used to be... He still remembered the feeling of being an overly-spry young teenager after the Perfect Soldier Project, He remembered what Boss had told him--that wasn't natural. He had what it took to be a great soldier all on his own.

Yes, he knew he was good--if Boss said so it had to be true. But that gave him even more of a reason not to forgive himself this time.
