New TV hooked into DVD player so that I don't have to unhook, rehook, and otherwise mess with cables in the back of the TV, VCR, DVD player, Stereo etc. etc: check
Couch: check
Bottles of diet pop: check
DVDs: Blockbuster here I come

Lazy, crappy-weather weekend here I come!

Hm...that's not good :(
Have you perhaps selected a digital or SVIDEO output from the DVD, but plugged in the regular video cable? (That's what happened to me when I was setting mine up ;) )
Of course, you can always get someone to make a "House" call to examine the "patient" ;)
