2006 Worlds exhibition - Stéphane Lambiel

NOTE: The two male comentators are Kurt Browning and Terry Gannon. Unfortunately I don't recognize who's who and nobody called either one of them by name.

ANN: Ladies and gentlemen, two time World Champion, from Switzerland, Stéphane Lambiel.

1: Not only two-time champ, the only two time champ here in Calgary. Repeated this year as the gold medalist. Stéphane Lambiel. Without the little zebra outfit.

2: Almost didn’t recognize him.

Peggy Fleming: Well, we told you they were going to be relaxed and having fun today, so he came in his jeans.

1-2?: Sure!

2: Think we better get ready for a rock video.

1: Even his shadow is fast.

2: You know when you watched him practice this week, and it’s the first time this week that you really see him letting it out. In practice, he’s the world champion but he’s very subdued.

1: Practiced with a cell phone the entire time this morning. Spins, jumps and all.

PF: Well he’s gonna be a busy guy.

1: That’s relaxed.

2: Phoned in his choreography maybe?

PF: Well, he’s not phoning in this performance. He’s putting in a lot of triples and wonderful spins, which he does very, very well.

2: Stéphane Lambiel disk will be out soon.

PF: (laughs)

2: Releasing his first single. Obviously likes this song.

1: Wow. Thank you, where’d his head go?!

PF: Oh my gosh, that’s (laughs) that was wonderful!

2: Don’t try that at home.

PF: (something) personality.

1: It’s amazing, isn’t it? Sasha Cohen does things on the ice that are amazing. This guy does too. And we found out this year. He’s for real. Stéphane Lambiel.

2007 Cup of Russia Short Program

2: And right now we're going take a look back and give you the opportunity to see the programs of two crowd favorites, Stephane Lambiel and Johnny Weir. And Paul Wylie, take a look here at Johnny Weir. And even though he's American, the Russians love him like he was their own.

PW: And he loves Russia. In fact, he just won an award called For the Love of Russia. He has a Russian Coach, Galina Zmievskaya, and he is on a roll. He was fantastic at the Cup of China and has looked very strong in practices here.

Johnny's artistry is matched with athleticism. he opens here with a triple lutz-triple toe loop. Classic ride out, very good glide across the ice. Short program is eight elements, three jumping elements, the second of which coming up here is a triple axel. This combination spin you'll see different changes of position and edge. Cannonball position there. The technical panel will be looking for those difficult features to give levels of difficulty. Then the judges will grade the execution of the elements.

2: Well, after a disappointing 8th place finish at the World Championships last year, Johnny knew that a change was in order, so he left his long-time coach Priscilla Hill in June and moved to train with Galina Zmievskaya. She coached Olympic champions Oksana Biaul, Victor Petrenko, and he has credited her discipline and training techniques with revitalizing his career. He's always had the artistry, now he says he's trained and ready to go, and when he is performing a program he doesn't worry about having the strength to do it, he knows it's there.

PW: Calm, confident, artistic, it's just another day at the office for Johnny Weir. I mean, makes you realize, that with a little training, it was always there.

2: There's a look at Victor Petrenko, Olympic champion, and Galina Zmievskaya, and the adoring fans of Johnny Weir.

PW: The opening triple lutz-triple toe loop was very solid, good air position, and the ride out, just very easy, great glide across the ice. The triple axel You know, could be a little bit higher, okay, but still absolutely smooth on the landing, he's gonna get positive grade of execution marks for that.

2: So now the marks first for technical elements, those are added to the program components, no deductions, no falls, a short program score of 80.15 for JOhnny Weir.

PW: And that's a personal best score - last time, he got an 80 at the Olympics in '06, so gotta be happy with that.

Peter Carruthers: Through that short program. You said you were happy with the jumps but not with the entire program. What do you mean?

JW: Well, the step sequences and spins were not up to snuff, they weren't my usual level of sophistication on these elements. So, um, I, I wish I would have performed them better but the jumps were, for me, fantastic and I was very happy to get those done cleanly. And even when I didn't feel I skated my best, I beat my personal best.

PC: It's just been a terrific season for you so far. What do you attribute that to? I know the new coaching changes have made a difference, but for you personally, also.

JW: Personally, I think I've just grown up a bit, because I, I was trying to have a personal life, have a life, and to go in all these new directions with, you know, trying to get into fashion, trying to get into, you know, the more celebrity-driven stuff, and just for fun, but I realized that it was, it was too much, I can't do everything, and I've, ah, I've finally realized that I have after this, two more seasons to be Olympic champion, to make myself into that and I had to be very mature and say, no life, no nothing, skating for two years, this is what I'm committed to, committed to being Olympic champion, and that's what I'm going for.

PC: A very focused Johnny Weir. Well done.

2007 Cup of Russia Long Program

Paul Wylie: This program is peppered with difficult jumps, beginning with two triple axel passes, but it's truly the artistry and the consistency that have brought Johnny success thus far this year. Beautiful combination. Face value of that worth 11.5. Quad is 9.0. Johnny says he hates this particular jump the most, a triple loop. It doesn't look like it. Last few times he's done it very well.

Not a break at all in that three jump combination. Each one of his jumps landed cleanly and with a great ride out.

2(f): He skated for ten years with coach Priscilla Hill who helped him develop his wonderful technique and also his artistry. But he felt that he just needed a change and a little more discipline. And the discipline and the attention that he's paid to his training has certainly paid off this year. Johnny Weir, delivering consistently. What a competitor.

1: Spasiba he says, and there's nothing that speaks louder than that audience reaction and a great skate. You know, Johnny has been kind of in the face of the media a lot in the past, but I think that his skating speaks much louder than those words.

(In the wings)

And he started off with this triple axel-triple toe loop, which the ride between the jumps just effortless, great landing. He's using that right arm in front to show that he can land this jump no matter what. And then the three-jump combination, triple lutz-double toe-double loop, this very valuable because it was after the halfway point, worth 9.68 base points, because of the placement in the program, and you see Galina and Victor embracing.

2: And this is the fun part. When you skate like this, you get to wait for the marks. His personal best is 151.98. He's easily going to take the lead here after the, ah, after that performance, and not quite his personal best. Just shy of that, but he has put tremendous pressure on the leader, Stephane Lambiel of Switzerland.

2010 Nationals Short Program

Note from thefrogg: I really really do not like the comentators on this one.*shudder* I miss Dick Button.

1: Our first skater in the Championship Men's Short Program.

ANN: Please welcome now, from the skating club of New York in New York City, Johnny Weir!

1: Now always one of the crowd favorites, from the Skating Club of New York, the 2006 US Champion, Johnny Weir. Tonight will be skating his short program to I love you, I hate you, by Raoul Deblasio. Johnny's coming off a bronze medal performance at the 2009 Grand Prix Final.

2(f): Opens up his short program with a solid triple lutz-triple toe combination. Beautiful triple axel with excellent flow coming out. Footwork into the triple flip. Excellent position on that sit-spin, his body was completely flat against his leg. Playing to the crowd a little bit, they love it! Straight line step sequence, good use of his upper body, in both sequences. Change foot combination spin, to finish a great short program for him, really fighting to make that Olympic team.

Three time National champion, Johnny Weir, really skating like someone that wants to go to Vancouver in a couple of weeks. And the crowd here, first standing ovation of the event, and it's for Johnny Weir. Deservedly so, I'd say.

2: Very solid short program. well, and Johnny's said his training has been going really really well. So I think he's, he's really worked through controlling all of his positions here, you can see his triple lutz-triple toe combination, and then the landing position with the extra arm to gain some extra points. and watch the height he gets on this triple axel, the leg comes through, completely straight, excellent speed going in and coming out of that jump. Just beautiful. And playing to the crowd.

1: And giving into that little extra Johnny flair right at the end, last impression for the judges.

2: Coach Galina Zmievskaya who also coached Oksana Baiul and Victor Petrenko. And his jacket he's wearing is Be Good Johnny Weir, he's going to have his own reality show, and it debuts on the 18th on the Sundance channel. So I guess you'll all have to tune in and check it out.

ANN: The scores for Johnny Weir. Technical elements score, 45.32. Program components score, 38.19. With zero deductions. Segment score for the short program 83.51, he's in first place.

1: So an 83.51 for the short program. Not quite a personal best, but very close to one, as he moves into first place through two skaters.

Johnny Weir speaks out against "offensive" comments

I, I'm not someone to cry over something or to feel weak about something. I felt very defiant when I saw these comments. I, I felt that it wasn't these two men criticizing my skating, it wasn't them criticizing my, my, my anything, it was them criticizing me as a person. And that was something that really, frankly, pissed me off. So, more than anything I just had to make a comment and a statement saying that I hope more kids can grow up the same way that I did, and more kids can feel the freedom that I feel to be themselves and to express themselves and that's the most important thing. That's the message I wanted to come out of all of this. Because out of ugly, I think the most important thing to do in life is to make something beautiful.

I can't say anything mean. I'm totally for freedom of speech and voicing your own opinion and so I can't, I can't like have them fired because they voiced their opinion and just the fact that they're on television. I've heard worse in bathrooms and whatnot about me, so. Uh, it's not a big, a big issue for me that they said it, it's just that I didn't, I didn't want other kids to have that same issue, and other, other people in the public eye to have that same issue. If I had the chance to sit down with them over a poutine, I think, uh, I think we'd all be like lovely people together. I think they would see who I really am, because being an athlete and being a figure skater I rarely have the opportunity to voice my opinion without it being misquoted. I'm always thought of as the sparkly, flamboyant character that wore a crown of roses. I mean that's what people see of me and they come up with a notion of what I must be like. And aside from my circle of, of very close friends and people, nobody knows me. Nobody knows what makes me tick, nobody knows what's, what's inside here (taps forehead) and here (taps chest).

I think masculinity is what you believe it to be. To me masculinity is all my perception, and uh, I think, I think masculinity and femeninity, it's something that's very old fashioned. There's a whole new generation of people that aren't defined by, by their sex or their race or who they like to sleep with. I think, I think as a person what your values are and what you believe in, and I think that that's the most important thing.

ETA: Thanks to kareneliza for offering the correct spelling of poutine.
