NAHS Conference 2006

Feb 22, 2006 21:26

This year's state National Art Honor Society conference was in Augusta, hosted by the Davidson Fine Arts Magnet Academy. The theme was "About Face", which sucked because all the workshops (most, at least) focused on portraiture, and I suck at portraiture. I took an animation class, which was decent.

I'll just post pics and describe as I go, since most of you don't care, haha.

Friday morning from 8am to 10am was crazy in the art room. I don't have any shots, but I wish I did. It was so hectic and clostrophobic in there, everyone getting all their art labeled and packaged and ready to go on the truck. Thank god my dad showed up with my refil of Elavil, haha. I would have had a breakdown without it.

So we were gone by 10:30am. Not much happened on the bus ride up there, we stopped at BK and I took this shot of Miles.

We got to the hotel at about 3:15pm, not too bad timing, but it seemed like forever. (Augusta is on the east side of Georgia, to the north, for the uninformed)

Philander sez: "yeeeah, I'm in this hotel with a bunch of white people.."

Andrew is offended.

Miles is pumped for the conference.

I thought this composition and lighting was cool. Andrew looks a little retro.

After about 30 minutes, we got back on the bus to head over to the school to register and drop off all the artwork. Even though the rest of the conference (planning wise, at least) sucked, the school was pretty awesome.

There was also a cool canal that ran under a bridge right in front of the school.

Here's some of the artwork that was on display.

The one on the right is pretty cool I guess.

I'm not so sure about the one on the right, but I think I recognize the kid from my workshop. The one in the middle is by Ariana Serrano, a sophomore at HCHS, and the one of the left is by Ross McPherson, a junior here too. As you can see, our school out-performs all others in this field. :D

All of these are Miles' work.

This is one of mine.

This is another of mine, it's in the front hall of HCHS now, near the office.

That night we went to some crappy museum for the "activity". They had good butter cookies and free sprite, but that's about it. They also yelled at us twice for taking photos, so this is the only one I got worth showing. I thought it was cool.

Saturday we got up at like 7:00 and left for the the conference at 8:15.

Me and Miles went to make final touches to our portfolios which would be judged for two scholarships, and then we all went to our workshops.

I had "Animation in Photoshop." When we all got in there (all seven of us), the teacher said the planned lesson was too boring so he scrapped it and came up with a lesson in claymation (you know, Gumby, Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, etc). I was midly excited at the news. We watched two short documentaries on the processes behind the Corpse Bride and Wallace and Gromit, then we made characters of our own out of wire and clay and used still cameras and little stages to make our own movies. Mine sucks. I won't show it.

These two asian girls had the best models. They were both speaking Korean to eachother mixed with English, so I was confused for a long time until I asked them about it.

They were gonna toss them, so I asked if I could have them. I gave them to Miles.

I found this drawing on my the computer I was working on. I had to share it.

After the workshops were over, I headed back to the commons and noticed some bearded man talking to Ross. Only it was Miles.

Miles had a face-painting class.

There was a VERY short awards ceremony. I mean, like 14 awards total, when in years past there has been like 40 awards. I was sad, because usually we get a chance to dominate, but this year with so few awards, it was just me and Austin that won something. Austin got 3rd in the Push Pin exhibit, and I won the Helen Flemming Stone scholarship.

We packed up the art and headed home.

At some point on the trip back, we stopped at Waffle House.

Andrew was stoked about some waffles.

Miles decided it was time to take off the beard.

At some point in the process of cleaning it off, he turned negro.

That's all the pictures I took. We finished eating, got back on the bus, and drove back to HCHS, stopping once for gas and urination. I got some sweet tarts.

We got back about 9:30pm.

I left my suitcase on the bus, and the lady went home. I had to wait for her at the Spectrum in Hamilton until like 10:30 to get it back.

I went to see Chloe' for a couple of hours, then went home, and slept for like five days.

THE END.

I love you! <3
