Axel's personality really shines through, which is particularly odd for a Nobody. Out of the entire Organization, he appears to be the only grey area in regards to whose side he's actually on. He's a skilled liar, keeping his extremely intelligent colleagues from guessing his true intentions and able to befriend those he needs to quickly and easily. He's very intelligent and even arrogant in his abilities. Before he met Roxas, Axel fit the profile of a Nobody perfectly; he killed without mercy, hesitancy or even regret. He could easily dispose and betray his colleagues, going as far as to joke about which member might be going down next with Zexion. Axel had no trouble with the dirty work Saix would give him and would he would often be sent on missions that were dangerous, risking his life for the sake of the Organization. He even helped Saix make his way to the top by killing everyone who were plotting to take the Organization down, which shows that he has loyalty and doesn't think twice when faced with opportunity. He worked for the Organization and didn't pose any questions as to why he was there-- he just did as he was supposed to, despite his smart and rebellious nature. Just like the other members, he wanted a heart and would do anything to receive it.
Not only is Axel an expert liar, he's also extremely talented with acting. He could keep a cool head when lying to both Larxene's and Marluxia's faces (and even when Larxene becomes flirtatious with him, Axel doesn't rise to her bait). Axel is generally an independent Nobody, preferring to be alone when on missions so that he could work at his own speed. Axel hides behind a number of facades, his most notable one his 'nice guy' act, which is usually his default go to guise. He can seem like the sweetest guy, albeit sarcastic, when he's determined to gain something from someone (be it trust, an object or even someone's death).
He's quick witted and his tongue is sharp with sarcasm, and just as his natural element of fire would suggest, he's quick to act and even quicker to become angered. He thinks up quick responses and always has something to say, whether it be something kind or something bitter. Although Nobodies have no hearts, it was through befriending Roxas that he finally felt as though he had one-- this is because those who get close to Sora, either through Roxas, Xion or Sora himself, start to feel things properly (whether they have a heart or not). Roxas is the first Nobody Axel took a real shine to and had known him since his (Roxas') first week at the Organization. It was the start of Axel's first real friendship within the Organization, as opposed to one made for the sake of betrayal. Despite Axel's independence, during the latter half of his life and after Roxas leaves the organization, he does become somewhat dependent on both the idea of having a heart because of Roxas and Roxas himself. It's not hard to see that Axel does care for Roxas, and he's the only one Axel has taken an active interest in within the Organization (apart from Saix, who he helped pave the way towards the top), even going as far as to die just to see him one more time. Though, having said that, Axel is still the unpredictable Nobody he always was-- he just had a little more heart than the others thanks to Roxas and Sora.
[Abilities]
Axel is a Nobody, which means he can use dark portals to get to wherever he might like to go, among other things. He doesn't have a heart-- he is incomplete. This generally means that he fakes his emotions and that he doesn't actually feel them (though around Roxas the line is blurred).
He has the power to wield fire and he owns two chakrams and he's very skilled at using both magic and physical attacks.

He has weird spiky hair and it's natural. He also has two turquoise tattoos upon his cheeks.

In fights, Axel seems to feign losing to escape a battle that may have been life threatening. He's done it twice, once with Sora and once with Roxas and while he retained damage, he certainly wasn't dead.

He might have been a Nobody, but faking emotions-- for Axel, at least-- was incredibly easy. He always carried himself a certain arrogant way, forcing those to believe in his presence more than he believed in it himself. He kicked at the ground, momentarily confused at what just transpired-- he had just died. The last attack he had to be suicidal-- he could remember those keen blue eyes belonging to both Sora and Roxas peering down at him and he also remembered the calming effect it had on him as he began to fade out.
He had always thought he would amount to nothing, given the fact he lived without a heart. It made sense that those who had nothing would become more of the same, and with that prospect on death, he obviously tried to steer clear of it. But he supposed it was worth it. Was this the next life? Was this the place he promised to meet Roxas in, despite knowing full well he wouldn't ever be able to see it? Had he crossed that line with a whole enough heart to penetrate its walls and somehow make it into a higher plane?
"Who knew I'd actually get to see it," he remarked slowly with a wry smirk, his eyes taking in the floating castle lying far above the ground. It seemed eerily familiar, and if he could feel, he was certain he'd feel an ominous foreboding.
