and arguably, your point is not entirely without merit. however, who was it when they worked in salem who decided they would be buying a car because the public transit commute was just too inefficient and such a complete time waster?
for serious, if i lived on the T, i would take the T. but i can't deal with buses - which, incidentally would not have gotten me home any sooner this afternoon.
Not *complete* time waster. It depended on the day. I certainly wasn't going to drive every day if I got a car (which I have yet to do).
But, approx. 1 1/2 hours on public trans was still approx. 1 1/2 hours on public trans, regardless of the weather. I think it only was longer once, really bad storm, rails froze.
And it's true, there isn't a particularly efficient way to get from where you live to Central. But, if folks who HAD efficient methods other than driving would leave their cars at home, there would be less congestion.

I did take the train. My car was parked at the train in Waltham. It took me 2 hours to drive the one mile from the train to my house. Yes, I should have left the car there and walked, I realize that now. I only drove to the train in the first place because, if the storm hadn't been as bad and my classes last night hadn't been cancelled, I have to rush from the train and drive straight to my classes I teach at night. Anyways, my point is, one mile. Two hours. Took my 3 1/2 hours total to get home. Got to N. Station at 4:30 hoping to get the 4:50 train, which was delayed and left N. Station at about 5:20, got to Waltham at 6. Got home a little after 8.
