interesting. The old Jewish way of doing things was, apparently, for the bridegroom to make a contract with the bride's parents, this was sealed by the sharing of a cup, then the bridegroom would go away and prepare the house for the bride, and then come back to get her. The similarities are obvious (Christ's last supper and his going away to prepare a place for us).

But, I think the bride waiting for the groom is silly. It's not as if we have to make every little aspect of the wedding fit with the Christ/church-Bridegroom/bride metaphor. Maybe somebody could just read a Bible verse or something.

Wait. Maybe to symbolize the sacrifice of Christ, the groom could be crucified at the front of the church. That would really grab everybody. Then the reception could be held at the hospital where the groom is getting stitches and a tetanus shot.

Well, I think that as much as I wouldn't choose have done our wedding with the groom coming in last, that is a cool thought to mull over! As one waiting with that bitter-sweet, deep-swelling joy for our Groom, I think it is a beautiful idea:) The metaphor of the faithful and true relationship of Jesus' love with and commitment to the church is my favorite and most awe-inspiring parts of marriage!
