justprompts : What's the point?
Spoilers for Dead Like Me 2x13: Last Call
Timeline: 2x13 directly after ordering Mason out, when he gives her the ring
Dedicated to
exvita [Mason]

"Please go," she'd whispered, and he'd complied, though he wasn't happy about it.  Neither was she.  She didn't want to be alone, didn't even want him to go, didn't want to let him out of her sight, but it really didn't fucking matter what Daisy Adair wanted.  What she had was the opposite of the Midas Touch - everything she touched fell apart, turned corrupt, rusted through.

She'd told him that she could never be that girl, because there really would never be a chance for her now.  Their lives were stuck in limbo, and that meant no moving on to another stage of 'life' because there wasn't any more life left for them: no falling in love, no getting married.  But it wasn't just that fact; it'd been like this since before her afterlife.

She'd told them that her big regret was not getting engaged during life, but the truth was she didn't think she ever would have, even if she hadn't died young.  Because the common factor in all the 'relationships' she'd had was her, and just like this situation with Ray, the fact that they failed was her fault.  She picked the wrong men, she was the wrong girl - not the type men wanted to come back to at night when they went home, but the type that they snuck out to see in the middle of the day, and who's name they forgot when they went to send roses to later.

The only reason Mason had seen her this way, like some fairy tale ending, was because he thought he was on the last page of the book, and she was the only princess he knew.  She'd heard too many last-night-on-earth types of stories before.  She'd been in those movies, played out those scenes.  They weren't romantic at all.  They were desperate, and they were fake.  If Mason was still here tomorrow, like he probably would be, he'd realize all of this had been stupid, a mistake.  And what was the point, anyways, in trying to get closer to anyone, when really, neither of them were going to get any kind of warning before they finally moved on?  One day, they'd just be alone again, just like that, and it would be pointless and cruel.  Not to mention, it would probably only end with Mason getting hurt -- if not by Daisy herself, but by Ray, who was only after him because of her.

She didn't even want him in her house, was terrified of what would happen if Ray had a chance to get his revenge.  It probably would be his last day on earth.  And it'd all be because he had the stupid idea in his head that she was worth risking the danger for.

She looked down at the ring; the ring that Mason had said was a token, that implied that she was something permanent in this world to him.

Mason was wrong.  The only thing permanent in this world was disappointment.
