The Toronto Garbage Strike

It's one thing for a union to go on strike to try and get the best deal they can for their members, I get that. That's how the system works. But when the union starts getting up to no good, that's what I can't stand ( Read more... )

I drive by here every day on my way to work. As I drove home tonight I saw things have come to a head, police had barricaded the drop off point.

Don't you live in Mississauga? That's a heck of a commute.

When I was there around 6pm there was just one police car visible and a few cops seemed to be talking to some of the union folks. Things seemed maybe a little tense, but not out of hand or anything. Later, when I headed back home again, I came from the other direction so didn't really see anything.

I also don't understand the union not helping their cause by harassing people dropping off garbage. It is a quick way of turning the public against you.

Now if they stopped people to argue their cause then that is understandable but not to slow people down just for the hell of it.

I also do not understand why there are all these temporary dumps being created all over the place. Is the city trying to spread out the strikers so they can not picket all of them or is it a deliberate ploy to make the city look dirty so that they are trying to force Dalton to enact back to work legislation?

You might appreciate this comic strip. It mentions Toronto's garbage plight.

You'd think inconveniencing thousands of people by stopping all garbage pick-up services would be a loud enough statement by itself. Harassing people and sabotaging garbage disposal it taking it a little too far.
