Happy late birthday :) I'm jealous of your chosen jaunt to celebrate. Cake and secondhand bookshopping sounds like an ideal way to spend a day.
I'm keen to go to Barter Books, sited in Alnwick Station and heavily recommended by the parents (for hugeness, cheapness, presence of help-yourself filter coffee, and especially the model train running round the top of the bookshelves).
I have a vague memory of writing that on someone else's journal before. Apologies if it was yours last time, too :)
Yes, Barter books was my usual retreat on Sundays when I lived in Newcastle. I fear thegreenman may not approve of the roaring fireplace they have in the first room with the coffee machine, although they do manage a special kind of cold in the much bigger room at the back. The aerial train set is quite excellent.
Oh dear, that's not good. Secondhand bookshops should have piles of unsorted books everywhere, making it awkward to get around (they're dimensionally transcendental, don'tcha know). Cold and damp are optional (and the latter certainly not ideal for the merchandise, obviously).
