I do not heart Huckabee

Folks it looks increasingly like this is the guy we'll be going up against in the general election in November, whether it's Hillary, Obama, Edwards, or a dark horse like Biden. With all due respect to my Christian friends and those with ordained ministers as parents (cough cough) the thought of a Southern Baptist minister being the president of ( Read more... )

do you really think this country would elect a fundamentalist? if GW's poll ratings are any indication (not to mention the issues americans generally view as most important in the upcoming election), religious -- or even social -- conservatism just isn't the electoral driving force it was a few years ago.

For some reason, I got serious. WTF? Sorry. ploaf December 11 2007, 16:44:55 UTC
First of all, yes, ha ha, all Christians and/or people involved in any kind of religion are socially conservative intolerant fundamentalist dicks who suck as people. Hee hee. And that's certainly not the same kind of generalization that Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly use to categorize all Democrats as gay tree-hugging baby-killing pedifiles. Nope. It's also not the same kind of generalization many foreigners make when they think of all Americans as loud, fat, godless warmongers. Totally different. Because it comes from the other side of the political spectrum. Not at all the same tactic. Hey I feel you here. I know you're tired of being singled out like this, and that isn't what I meant to do here at all. I'm very sorry if I pissed you off or caused offense. I just didn't express myself very well -- I am a firm believer in a strong alliance between progressivism and the faithful; it's how we got the New Deal. Most of the members of my Mom's family are very devout leftists. I only meant to say that southern baptism is a particularly conservative strain of protestantism and tends to be associated with the far-right of the political spectrum. This isn't of course to say that all southern baptists are like this but rather that Huckabee himself is like this and I find the prospect of his presidency pretty frightening. My addendum there was meant precisely not to give offense to you, but I seemed to have screwed that up. Sorry ( ... )

Oh, Faris, I could never stay mad at you. ploaf December 11 2007, 17:25:41 UTC
I know you meant no offense. I've just got this weird compulsion to get defensive on this topic...even when I know it wasn't intended to push those buttons. In the vein of Stephen Colbert, I created a new word to capture this urge: defensoholism. It's technical definition is "an addiction to defensohol." So, sorry about that ( ... )
