I agree that people love to use the Yankees as a moneyed scapegoat when the past few offseasons have been tame by their old (or Boston's current) standards. That said, this year I fully expected them to throw money, especially pitching money, at whatever they could get, regardless of the long-term considerations. Mussina, Pettitte, Giambi, Pavano and abreu all just came off the books. That's $77 million for them to play with next year alone...not counting the money that's going to pour in from the new stadium.
So I'm not pleased with the Burnett signing, but it doesn't surprise me, and it's actually not as irresponsible a financial decision as some they've made in the past given the circumstances.
