This Is a Bad Idea

Why do I find the idea of National Novel-Writing Month so appealing? I don't read fiction any more. I haven't even tried in over a year, because my disbelief suspenders are likely to snap without warning. I should have zero interest in writing it.

Maybe you should just try reading one? ("I'm nearly finished with my novel!")

I happen to have a book here, The Atrocity Archives by Charles Stross, that was lent/given to me by a friend with the understanding that I could pass it on again, and while I was enjoying it I was repeatedly thinking that you would like it a lot. It starts out with the hook of a lot of sysadmin inside-culture, works it into a fairly serious treatment of eldritch abominations from other dimensions, and eventually leads to Nazis in a not at all predictable way.

Replying to this has been on my “to do real soon now” list for what appears to be just over one month. I guess it goes without saying that NaNoWriMo is something that happened to other people.

I've had a couple Charles Stross stories sitting on my hard drive since Steve Jackson plugged that very book back in 2007. Of course, I never got around to reading any of them, so I guess PerNoReMo didn't happen either ( ... )

I was actually just alerted to the existence of this by Joe Blevins, my Unloosen collaborator. Of course, I've been patiently chipping away at my novel for the past nine months, so I have a bit of a head start, but this may be the impetus I need to get serious about it.

Was it?

Also, if by any chance you found an unclaimed November lying around… I seem to have misplaced mine.

It was not. I determined early on that I wouldn't be participating. And much as I would like to move faster on it, the novel continues to move along at a snail's pace.
