Ship meme - Day 04 - The pairing with the most chemistry?
The next couple of questions are easy, but the couple with the most chemistry is tricky. I always think people would tend to say it's their most recent ship, just because the memories are fresh, just like your last cigarette was always the best one (not that I'd know, it's a saying, lol)
I may not have loads of ships but I do or did care strongly about all of them at some point and I assume all of them had chemistry or I wouldn't ship them. Sometimes I can see the chemistry even in couples I don't ship - for example Jack/Sawyer in Lost.
Anyway, I had to dig far back for this one and came up with two possibilities and I used Youtube as a tiebreaker -
Xena/Gabrielle
Some people would not even consider Xena and Gabrielle canon, but those people can just shut up and go back into their closets and all the way to Narnia, thank you very much. As a ship it has a lot more ground and reason to exist than any other in the series.
To be fair, Lucy Lawless has chemistry with pretty much anyone - even the extra who's just in the background folding parchment XD - but I could honestly believe that these two would do absolutely anything for each other. Whatever emotion they were portraying towards each other, even hate at some points, Lucy and Renee's acting worked, it was believable and they were excellent at both drama and comedy.
This ship is kind of different in that the infamous concept of 'subtext' is not the same as the more frequent situation of UST. Most couples have UST (I feel like I should explain what it stands for and then I think - there can't seriously be a person among my friends who doesn't know what it is XD), the characters are in love with each other, don't tell each other or even "don't know it yet" and you're waiting for either one to finally become unable to hold it all in. Hopefully.
Subtext meant that there is an implied romantic relationship between the characters, but some people don't see it so it was left to our imaginations to decide whether the two were in fact a couple or not. To me, it was never a question that they were, so there wasn't much of the trepidation associated with shipping, because whatever happened, these two loved each other and they were both well aware of it, there was no big revelation, no before and after they got together. Well, they must have got together at some point, which presumably is season 2 because that's when writers started (consciously) putting the subtext in.
I found this video as well which was cute and not the usual melodramatic shippy montage with some angsty love song. I had found a nice collection of Xena/Gabrielle shippy scenes but it was set to an instrumental version of My heart will go on and I couldn't bring myself to post it, especially because it reminds me of that bloody busker and his one-string instrument in Covent Garden!!
