That scene in the episode where Anna goes back in time to kill Mary, and they're holed up in that abandoned house and John is kinda pissed about learning about demons, then asks how to make the sigil, and cuts his hand without hesitation and Dean says 'You reminded me of my dad for a minute' breaks my heart every time! Because you can just see him change. I love flashbacks eps. Also because every time Dean tells Mary to not go into Sam's room, it breaks my heart. I think that's how I feel about John- the potential of him as a father and then what actually happened- it's heartbreaking.
I love that ep so very much, it's really amazing. And yeah, that bit with John is just so heartbreaking. Really a wonderful character moment for him, you can see where he's been and exactly where he's going to end up. And when Dean tells Mary that he's her son, I tear up every single damn time.
John is a tragic figure what with the loss and sacrifice. He seemed to want both revenge and to protect his youngest. In pursuing both, he sacrificed everything. I find it fascinating that he sacrificed himself to save Dean, apologized to Dean for heaping too much on him as he grew up and then promptly dumped even more burden on him. Complicated and contradictory.
I also love that Sam and Dean swapped positions in their views of their Dad over time. Dean moved from unadulterated love and admiration to a cynical, darker view. Sam shifted from cynicism and anger to forgiveness.
You're right, they have switched their opinions around on their dad, haven't they? Very interesting. And John is definitely a complicated man, and an even more complicated father. I don't doubt that he loved Sam and Dean fiercely, I think he just didn't know how to combine that with his need for revenge.
